Adult Braces Options
Traditionally, we’ve associated the need for orthodontic treatment like braces with children and teens. However, according to recent statistics from the American Association of Orthodontists, nearly a quarter of all individuals who get braces are adults. Now more than ever, people 18 and over are looking for options to enhance not only the function, but also the appearance of their teeth. Fortunately, orthodontists are now able to offer multiple options to help our adult patients achieve straighter teeth!
Here at Oakland Dental Specialty, I’m proud to offer an extensive array of teeth-straightening procedures, from traditional metal braces to the Invisalign® aligner system. With the advanced materials and techniques we have available to us today, getting a straighter smile is much more efficient, convenient, and comfortable, not to mention discreet. Even so, you may be wondering if adult braces are worth it. Why do some adults choose orthodontic treatment? Are there benefits beyond a straighter smile? What kind of options are available to you as an adult patient?
Straighter teeth = healthier mouth
Straight teeth with a correct bite and proper alignment are healthier. Crooked and misaligned teeth have more places for plaque to hide, as well as more pockets for food to get stuck in. The more plaque and bacteria are allowed to build up, the greater your chance of developing decay, inflammation, and gum disease. Sometimes an improper bite due to misaligned or crooked teeth means you’re unable to chew food properly either, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems.
Getting braces as an adult can improve:
- the function of your teeth, allowing you to bite and chew correctly
- your overall oral health
- your self-confidence and self-esteem
Getting braces as an adult can prevent:
- tooth decay, by correcting areas that allow plaque to build up easily
- (or improve) periodontal problems
- (or reduce) bone loss around teeth
- straining on your teeth, jaws, and muscles that could lead to a greater risk of tooth breakage
- the abnormal wearing of tooth surfaces
- some difficulties in chewing
Types of braces available to adults
The type of orthodontic treatment you may need as an adult will depend on several factors, such as:
- the severity of your bite
- how crooked your teeth are
- whether or not headgear or other special appliances will be necessary
- the amount of time estimated to correct your specific problem
- the end result you and your orthodontist have in mind
The materials and techniques used for braces have advanced considerably over time. Traditional metal braces are no longer the only option, but even they have improved drastically in recent years. There are also more “invisible” options available. Although not everyone is a candidate for these popular invisible treatments, depending on your specific circumstances, they may be for you!
Oakland Dental Specialty offer the following types of braces treatment to our patients.
These are the most common type of braces, and although they have a bit of reputation, they’re more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, these straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you also have the option of adding colored elastics for a more unique and colorful smile, although admittedly this isn’t as popular with adults as it is with children and teens!
The Damon System is self-ligating, meaning there’s no need for elastic ties to keep the wire in. Without these ties, the braces stay clean, and friction is reduced. Damon braces are very precise and effective. With this system, we can reduce the need for many of the time-consuming, complicated procedures that are used with traditional braces. Fewer adjustments are required, your treatment progresses more efficiently, and you’ll generally have less discomfort along the way. There are both metal and aesthetic versions available.
Ceramic braces are made of clear materials, and while not “invisible,” they are far less visible on your teeth than traditional braces. These are very popular choices for older teens and adults who are more image conscious. These braces do require more attention to oral hygiene as they’re larger and sometimes more brittle than their metal counterparts.
Invisalign® is the ultimate in aesthetic treatment options. We use custom-made clear trays to gently move your teeth into the ideal position over time. These aligners are removable when you’re eating or drinking, so there are no frustrating food restrictions. You can also take them out for short periods of time for things like photos or special occasions. You must wear them 20-22 hours a day throughout the course of your treatment to guarantee good results, but these are a wonderful option for working professionals and for adult patients seeking a discrete solution for straightening their smile.
